FAQ
Questions we get a lot.
If yours isn't here, write to hello@foundational.house and we'll answer within a day or two.
- Do I need to already be a 501(c)(3)?
- No. Most of our founders aren't incorporated when they apply. We help you decide whether 501(c)(3), fiscal sponsorship, or a hybrid structure makes sense, and we cover the legal cost of setting it up.
- Is the $25k a grant or an investment?
- A grant. Foundational takes no equity, no IP rights, and no board seats. It's yours to spend on whatever helps you build, including your own salary.
- Do I have to live in the house?
- Yes. The house is the program. We pay for your room while you're with us. If you have a partner or kids, talk to us; we've made it work before.
- Are international founders welcome?
- Yes. We help with the B-1 visa and cover the application fee. The program is designed to fit inside that window.
- What if I'm a solo founder?
- About a third of our founders are solo. We'd rather have one obsessed person than three lukewarm ones.
- What kinds of nonprofits do you back?
- Anything with clear public benefit. Past cohorts have built in mental health, criminal justice, climate, education, civic tech, global health, and accessibility. We have no quotas by issue area.
- When are applications due?
- March 15. We do rolling reviews and reply within three weeks of submission.
- Who funds Foundational?
- A small group of operators, foundations, and family offices who fund the house and the grant pool directly. Founders never owe them anything.
